“From an audience perspective it’s like a kid in a candy store for a day,” says bassist Lisa Mezzacappa, who presents a set by her crime fiction-inspired combo avantNOIR. “So much has to do with Dominique’s leadership and vision. I’ve never heard him disparage a practice or genre. From most conservative traditional form to the most experimental, he treats it all with curiosity and respect, and this event glows with that spirit.”. This year’s program celebrates 250 years of the string quartet, with 30-minute sets by St. Lawrence String Quartet, New Esterházy Quartet, Sunrise String Quartet, Telegraph Quartet, Thalea Quartet, Del Sol Quartet, Friction Quartet and Kronos Quartet, among others. But from the straight-ahead swing of guitarist Terrence Brewer’s Sextet and the loose and limber improvisational flights of clarinetist Ben Goldberg and pianist Myra Melford, to the extended compositions of trumpeter Ian Carey Quintet + 1 and the intricately orchestrated post bop jazz of the Kasey Knudsen Sextet, .S.F. Music Day brims with many of the Bay Area’s most creatively charged ensembles.

After the program ends, volunteers will place additional wreaths on the graves in Section L, Grave No. L-7502 (the gravesite of George Edward Cahill). Each year, the sections are rotated to eventually include all veterans buried at the cemetery. Amy O’Campo, president, San Mateo County Blue Star Moms, co-chairwoman of the Wreaths Across America subcommittee along with Leianne Graves, a Gold Star mother, will give wreath laying instructions. The idea for Wreaths Across American was conceived in 1992 by Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company of Harrington, Maine, who donated wreaths to be placed at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. In 2005, the project expanded nationwide. In 2007, it was designated a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, and in 2008, the U.S. Congress unanimously voted Dec. 13, 2008, as Wreaths Across America Day.
Gray’s most poignant memory came in 2011 when he was at the parks and public works offices on Miles Avenue and a call came in that a man had collapsed nearby on the Los Gatos Creek Trail, “A nurse who was in the office and I performed CPR on him and saved him,” Gray said, “Two months later I actually met the guy, and he was very appreciative to be alive.”, Gray is going out with a lot of memories and, indeed, with a bang: He was to oversee activities at last weekend’s Los Gatos Park Dance at Oak Meadow, plus a Labor Day party with multiple bands playing ballet flats blush that was expected to attract 400 to 500 people ..
